Issues and Solutions....Vaginal Dryness

I have read that vaginal dryness can affect any woman, but after the Menopause it is very common, affecting over 50% of post menopausal women aged between 51 and 60. After the menopause the ovaries stop producing oestrogen and one of the early signs of this is reduced lubrication during sex....this can lead to painful intercourse. Painful intercourse can in turn lead to a loss of sexual desire. Loss of sexual desire can cause problems in relationships especially if women feel that they cannot discuss this issue with their partner.

Vaginal dryness can also cause pain and discomfort while sitting, standing, urinating and exercising. There can also be a change to the vaginal discharge. It can become discoloured, slightly smelly and women may also experience irritation and a burning feeling. It can affect everyday life whether sexually active or not.

It is important that women understand the changes their body is going through and that this is common and a natural part of the ageing process. Being aware and informed will make it easier to accept and talk about, and to seek solutions.

For my own part I was going to the doctor on another matter and just mentioned to her how I was feeling...I felt uncomfortable and irritated sitting and walking. I had never heard of vaginal dryness but turns out I was definitely suffering from it.

Talking to a doctor is important and they will be able to prescribe a treatment to suit you. One of the treatment options is local oestrogen. This is basically a small tablet inserted with a vaginal applicator. Vaginal dryness responds well to this treatment and it eases the pain and discomfort during sex, corrects the vaginal PH and regulates bacteria. The HRT is localised in this form and therefore the risks are lower. This is the treatment that I was prescribed and I found it very effective and easy to use. Other things that help, especially for women not suited to using HRT, are lubricants and moisturisers, avoiding perfumed soaps and washes, and even taking more time during intercourse to allow the glands to naturally produce the lubrication.

It is important for women to understand that there are solutions and ideas for management of the many symptoms of the menopause and ageing process.
